Molding American Youth Into Democracy's Citizens
There was a school in San Francisco before the Gold Rush . A primary school was built in 1848 long before any firehouse or police station. Its location was on the Plaza, Yerba Buena's town square, now called Portsmouth Square. An eight-foot concrete slab with a bas-relief outline of the school marks the place where the one-room schoolhouse was located on the southwest corner near Brenham Place and Clay.

Eight years later in 1856, notwithstanding the Gold Rush, destructive fires, and the need for Vigilante justice, the San Francisco School Board established the state's first public high school. Sixty-three candidates from the city's seven elementary (grammar) schools were admitted after passing an examination. Three years later eleven students (seven boys & four girls) remained to graduate. Marriage and dropping out to teach in the grammar schools had thinned their ranks - the first Lowellites to become classroom teachers and precursors to countless schoolmates, including those honored in this article, who have followed in their footsteps.

When compiling the names of our honorees, this writer was amazed at the number of Lowell graduates following teaching careers. The more glamorous professions may get our attention, but here we have hundreds of alumni who, quietly and without fanfare, provide young people with the knowledge and values that are the strength of a democratic society. What a noble calling! Not only are the numbers impressive but the diversity of their teaching specialties is astonishing.

Lowell graduates serve in public, private, parochial, and numerous special schools from preschool and kindergarten to the 12th grade. They teach all the academic disciplines including the Advance Placement level, music, art, drama, P.E./athletics, bi-lingual, Spec.Ed., Counseling and even Home Economics (Lowell girls don't always have their noses in books). Lowellites have formed partnerships with communities throughout California to help parents raise their children to be good citizens - surely, one of Lowell's proudest legacies.

Shirley Painter Perkins '62 embodies the commitment to teaching that characterizes that legacy. "I was a product of Berkeley in the '60s and chose teaching as a career. Thirty-seven years later I'm proud to say that, one child at a time, I believe I have made a difference in many of my students' lives. I can still remember the light in the eyes of one fourth grade non-reader when he knew that he had "figured it out" and that he could finally read. Some return to borrow books and I realize I have instilled in them a love of reading. In college I volunteered for an after-school tutoring program and decided I wanted to spend my life teaching children. Today I am a Reading Recovery teacher and teach reading to the lowest first graders. Because each child has different reasons for non-reading, I have to draw on all my training as a teacher to bring the wonders of reading into their lives. The joy of it never grows old".

Role models abound in Lowell's classrooms. Anne Kael Wallach '29, Lowell teacher, 1951-1974, wrote of her love of teaching, "The excitement of connecting with children began just before I turned 21, teaching in a rural school, Graton in Sonoma County, then a year in a one-room schoolhouse with all 8 grades and 26 students. A healthy draught of liveliness and eagerness that laid the foundation of many years of classrooms that never trapped me within four walls. Teaching English at Lowell was the longest, liveliest drink with the excitement of expanding ideas, of mutual learning. Work, yes, but I grew with it, and so did many of my students who remain adolescents in my memory while they now are mature contributing citizens. I continue my volunteer efforts that have happily taken me into the 21st Century." (Anne was the first Coordinator of Lowell's Gifted Program. She is the mother of three Lowellites. Ed.)

Flossie Lewis, Lowell teacher, 1969-1989, was a colleague of Anne's who, with JoAnn Stewart, Lee Ann Torlakson, Bob Bahnsen, et al, ruled R. 215, the Gifted Resource Center. Flossie was a character, an independent spirit, and an inspiration to a generation of students and teachers alike. Still, it was a surprise when the august U.C. Berkeley English Dept. announced that Flossie had earned a Doctorate at the age of 74, the oldest person in its history to earn a Ph.D. Time to "rest on her oars" . . . not Flossie. She offered her services as a mentor and soon found herself, with cane, and head held high, taking BART from Berkeley to 16th and Mission and walking into Mission H.S. Her return to the classroom is the latest adventure in her teaching career, and living proof that to the young in heart, age is a state of mind.

Alumnus Bob Swingley '46 asked that his sentiments about his teachers be included here. "My education in the city schools prepared me well (and then some) to compete in the late Forties at Stanford with returning veterans and private school classmates. Teachers like Bob Anino at Aptos and Lowell were an inspiration to me that has lasted a lifetime. I am proud to have my name associated with this tribute to our classroom teachers."

Every alum reading these words will have fond memories of favorite teachers. Many of our honorees will remember gifted teachers who made learning a joy and influenced their career choices. Now, these Lowellites have come full circle and teach classes of their own as role models for the next generation of teachers.

The desire to teach is a gift; the ability to teach, a blessing. Bonded in the classroom, they evolve into a community treasure - a dedicated teacher - personified by the Honor Roll published below.

The LAA office learned with regret from his son, Allan Gold '53, that Lowell's senior alumnus and retired teacher, Benjamin P. Gold, had passed away last December. He was 104 years old. Mr. Gold was a UCB graduate with a major in Chemistry. He taught for 40 years in the East Bay.

I am proudest of The Young People's Shakespeare Company, which I developed in 1989 and directed until 1999. ANDY LEONG, an accountant by profession and a walk-on coach for 18 years, deserves a place of honor among his Lowell teacher/coach colleagues. His long service may be unique among SFUSD coaches. For 18 years he has been assistant to Coach Jim Thomas of the girls' basketball team, sharing the excitement of seven AAA championships. His record as Track & Cross Country coach is remarkable: Sixteen years (14 as Head Coach) with the track team - 16 Girls' Varsity Championships and 8 boys Varsity titles (AAA champs, a record 7 years in a row). Andy has been Cross Country Coach for 13 years - 13 Girls Varsity Championships, and 12 Boys Championships. Three times at the Calif.
