Lowell M.B.A.s - Helping to put the BOOM in our booming economy! Sounded like a good title when we began our research for this article a year ago. But alas, the boom went bust and with it our clever title. Ever flexible, we credit our M.B.A.s (approx. 800) for their contributions to the prosperous Nineties and look to them to help lead the economy to renewed prosperity in the coming decade.

Hansen Lieu, Class of 1987, a former LAA Director had this to say about the M.B.A. degree and its value to a business career:

"Just a few lines about my MBA experiences at Haas School of Business . . .

About 5 years ago, I was at a crossroad in my career. After working for 7 years as a technical consultant helping companies to increase their business value by leveraging technologies, I had a dilemma: Should I continue to build my career in the same field or make a change? Although I enjoyed the learning opportunities and my impact on organizations offered in the current profession, I foresaw the limited potential for professional growth given my background. Specifically, I was lacking the business fundamental knowledge and management training that would enable me to excel in my career. Besides, I was ready to try something new. I wanted to move into the business management of high technology, rather than to continue to be its implementer.

After this assessment, I decided that the pursuit of an MBA was my best stepping stone to achieve my career aspiration. By investing two to three years at a leading business school, I would gain the following:

Learn business fundamentals
Learn various frameworks and models, upon which many business are built
Interact with others who have similar aspirations
Build my professional credibility
Enable a career change

The Haas School of Business at Berkeley was a great fit for me. Haas is a nationally ranked top 10 school that offers both a full-time and part-time program. The campus is located within close proximity to Silicon Valley. Its faculty members are thought leaders in many areas such as marketing, economic, international business and real estate. It has great support staff that works hard to assist the student body. The intelligent architecture of the school building offers state of the art learning environment for its students. The student body at Haas comes from many different fields such as advertising, public sector, telecommunication, software, biotech, consumer goods and law. This diversity in the student body allowed me to learn from myriad perspectives during class discussions and projects. In short, it greatly enriched my MBA experience at Haas.

Looking back, I have definitely benefited from the years I spent at Haas. Not only have I learned how businesses operate and decisions are made, I have also learned to be a successful leader with a business organization."
