This article is a tribute to Lowellites who chose careers in the legal profession. The attorneys listed below are the beneficiaries of a proud legal heritage: two of their predecessors in the Law were in Cal's first graduating Class of 1873 - one was Berkeley's first Gold Medalist and the other became a Regent. Another was Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court, a schoolmate created the Regional Park System in the East Bay and a third was Secretary of the Interior under President Wilson. In the City, alumni were building the law firms that are among the largest in the profession: Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro, (The Thundering Herd); Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison; Morrison & Foerster; Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe; Heller, Ehrman, et al; and McCutcheon, Doyle, et al. - all had Lowell founders, co-founders or name partners. Modern Lowellites are managing partners, partners, and lawyers in these law firms founded by fellow-alumni a century ago. At the same time, alums were becoming Judges of the Superior Court, California Supreme Court, U.S. District Court, U.S. & California Courts of Appeal, and a Chief Justice of the Nevada Supreme Court.

Not surprisingly, politics has weaned many Lowell J.D.'s from the courtroom, including numerous city Supervisors, members of the Board of Education, Public Defender, Commissioners (Police, Park, Public Library, Planning, Art, Airport, Fire, etc.), State Assemblymen and Senators, a Political Boss (who enjoyed a state-sponsored vacation in beautiful Marin, at San Quentin prison where he wrote his memoirs), and a Governor. Alas, no Lowellite has been Mayor of San Francisco, although two have tried, unsuccessfully.

Lowell L.L.B.'s and J.D.'s have not neglected academia: Alexander M. Kidd, Class of 1896, was Professor of Law, UCB; Wesley N. Hohfeld '97 was a Law Professor at Stanford & Yale; Maurice Harrison '04 was Dean of the Hastings College of the Law; and Mrs. Barbara Nachtrieb Armstrong '07 was one of the first female Law Professors at Cal. Today, dozens of Lowell attorneys are also professors at Schools of Law throughout the country.

Practices include every conceivable branch of the legal profession: Judges from the U.S. Supreme Court to the Bankruptcy Courts; Public Defenders, District Attorneys, City Attorneys, Administrative Law Judges, Corporation Lawyers, Sole Practitioners, FBI Agents, law firm Members/Partners, Arbitrators, Mediators; Attys: Political Law, Intellectual Property , Patent Law, Estate Planning, Child Advocacy , Prisoner Legal Services; Attys: U.S. Dept. of Justice; House Ways & Means Comm., Veterans' Affairs, Calif. Court of Appeals, Attorney General's Office, U.S. Int'l trade Commission, Dept. of Treasury; and numerous attorneys/CEO's/entrepreneurs who apply their legal skills in the business world - an amazing array of legal talent!

It's not surprising if we look at their high school records: Student Body & Class Presidents, Shield & Scroll Presidents, Henry Karpenstein Award Scholars, Editors of the Red & White & The Lowell, Forensic Society Presidents, JROTC Battalion/Regimental Commanders, Head Yell Leaders, Valedictorians, All-City athletes, and eventually Phi Beta Kappans, UCB Gold Medallists, Rhodes & British Marshall Scholars, Stanford Trustees and UCB Regents. What a legacy our Lowellites in the Law enjoy!
