This article is a tribute to Lowell graduates who chose careers in the medical profession. We honor Lowell's first doctor, a graduate of the Pioneer Class of 1859 and a surgeon in the Union Army. We also salute our Nobel Laureate in Medicine, Class of 1892. Sadly, we honor the memory of Dr. Kim Fang '69, who gave his life last January defending his home and family.

The "point man" in our list of Lowell "Medicine Men & Women" is a dentist who was born in the 19th Century, practiced in the 20th, and celebrated the 21st. Congratulations to Lowell's senior medical practitioner!

Among our 800+ honorees are some remarkable stories: Editor of The Lowell, Stanford/Northwestern, Pediatrician, Medical Director, -- while raising 5 children; tennis star, Stanford, Internal Medicine/Psychiatry, Clinical Professor, organized medical programs in Third World and Eastern European countries; the Pediatrician who delivers her classmates' babies; and the eminent ophthalmologist whose twin sons were AAA All-City, 1st Team, football halfbacks.

There were hints of their success while at Lowell: AAA sports champions, Student Body & Class Presidents, Valedictorians, Henry Karpenstein Scholars, Shield & Scroll Presidents, ROTC Battalion Commanders, Girls' Block "L" Presidents, Editors of The Lowell and Red & White, and Head Yell Leaders - student leaders while earning the grades for acceptance to the best colleges in the country. Today, the several hundred schoolmates are serving in every conceivable specialty in the healing arts.

No "ology" is safe from our specialists: Rheumatology, Gynecology, Neuroradiology, Cardiology, Dermatology, Gastroenterology, Hematology, Anesthesiology, Oncology, Psychology, Pathology, Ophthalmology, Nephrology, Neurology, Otolaryngology, Neonatology, Epidemiology, Herbology, Psychobiology, Microbiology, and a few we may have missed. Nor do they neglect the good old-fashioned specialties like Surgery, Internal Medicine, Public Health, Pediatrics, Veterinary Medicine, Psychiatry, Orthopedics, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Acapuncture, OB/GYN, Nurse Practitioner, Operating Room Nurse, Pediatric Nurse, Clinical Nurse, and others that may have escaped our notice.

The dentists have their own specialties: Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon; Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon, Periodontist, Orthodontist, Endodontist, and Pediatric Dentist. Throughout the years, the U. of Pacific School of Dentistry in S.F. and UCSF have been the dental schools of choice for many aspiring dentists. Dr. Molinari in the early Twenties received his D.D.S. at UOP and many of our young dentists in the Eighties follow in his footsteps.

In researching this article, we noticed that the productive partnership between Lowell and U.C. Berkeley continues unabated. About 40% of Lowell's aspiring medical students attended UCB and most returned to the City for M.D. training at UCSF. (However, in the past two years, more Lowellites enrolled at U.C. Davis than at Berkeley. First time that has happened since UCD was established. Ed.)

Rounding out our health services family are the Optometrists (O.D.), Podiatrists (D.P.M.), and Pharmacists (Pharm.D.). The pharmacy profession is experiencing quite a change. Fifty years ago women pharmacists were a rarity. Now, a look at the Eighties' graduates shows that the girls have discovered the benefits of a Pharm.D. and are flocking into pharmacy (9 Pharm.D. alumnae in the Class of '89). The trend of women into medicine is evident from our sampling of medical alums in this article: in the years, 1950-55, we find 53 men and 17 women in a branch of medicine; in the 1980-85 years, the numbers are 37 men and 46 women. There are 14 alumnae M.D.'s in our sampling who attended the Old Lowell (thru 1962); 85 female M.D.'s are New Lowell graduates. It is also clear that if you belong to Kaiser Permanente, the chances are that either your doctor, nurse or pharmacist is a Lowellite. Forty-eight of our honorees are Kaiser practitioners.

Varying versions of the HIPPOCRATIC OATH have been taken for 2000 years by physicians entering the practice of medicine. At one time the oath was ascribed to the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates, but modern research has shown that it most probably originated in a Pythagorean sect of the 4th century BC. In its original form, the so-called Hippocratic oath prohibited participation in surgery or abortions. At the height of Christianity, most European physicians accepted both of these prohibitions. Many contemporary medical schools impose a revised and modernized version of the oath as an admonition and an affirmation to which their graduating classes assent. One version, approved by the American Medical Association, is as follows:

You do solemnly swear, each by whatever he or she holds most sacred

That you will be loyal to the Profession of Medicine and just and generous to its members

That you will lead your lives and practice your art in uprightness and honor That into whatsoever house you shall enter, it shall be for the good of the sick to the utmost of your power, your holding yourselves far aloof from wrong, from corruption, from the tempting of others to vice

That you will exercise your art solely for the cure of patients, and will give no drug, perform no operation, for a criminal purpose, even if solicited, far less suggest it

That whatsoever you shall see or hear of the lives of men and women which is not fitting to be spoken, you will keep inviolably secret

These things do you swear. Let each bow the head in a sign of acquiescence

And now, if you will be true to this, your oath, may prosperity and good repute by ever yours; the opposite, if you shall prove yourselves forsworn.
