Tour of the new Science/Academic Wing

A hard hat tour of the new addition was held on August 15th, 2003. A lucky group of invited alumni were led through all 29,000 square feet of the new building by the head architect and other project officials. The tour also included access into the newly demolished areas of Building Six, which will be remodeled into new classrooms. Where Chemistry and Physics labs once stood along the second floor corridor, only pipes, concrete, and rebar remain. The project to modernize the main building will continue through December 2003 with the installation of an integrated computer network system throughout the campus. It will culminate in the removal of twelve temporary bungalows, which have stood for well over 20 years.

The New Wing faces south and overlooks the Soccer Field. The walkway to the main entrance is protected from the elements. Flowers and trees have been planted in the intersecting courtyard.
The view from the Southern corner shows all three floors. The windows of the main lobby stretch from floor to ceiling. This is the view from the second floor through the lobby windows.
The lobby has a bench that curves along the line of the windows. The wooden ceiling above the lobby follows the same arched path. A central display case is featured prominently in the main lobby.
The interior hallways are painted red and white. Two new computer labs are located on the first floor. Special lighting fixtures were installed to reduce the glare off PC monitors.
The Journalism classrooms feature plenty of storage space. The science labs feature wall to wall cabinets for storage. The raised ceiling of the Physics lab can accommodate more experiments.
The new wing features the cleanest bathrooms on campus. The ceramics classroom has stainless steel countertops. The foreign language lab features digital lesson plans. language_lab

The hallway walls are gone. The old journalism room is on the far left. The old electronics lab was gutted as well. Wires hang from the ceiling. Another new set of classrooms will be completed in December 2003. Stay tuned!

Addendum:
The section of the main campus that is currently being remodeled, referred to here as Building Six, is located between the Math wing and the Biology labs on the second floor. When the renovation project is complete, this section will consist of eight generic classrooms, two science classrooms, and several offices. The old Journalism classroom and the bathrooms across the hallway are the only parts of Building Six that will remain structurally unchanged. You can visit the SFUSD website to view a picture of what this part of the campus used to look like before it was demolished.
