New Science Wing Construction Update
By Terence Abad (Lowell '76)

New Science Wing Following groundbreaking in February, 2002, progress has been slow but steady on Lowell's new classroom building. Site preparation and earth-moving work lasted until June, 2002, including the establishment of a new fire access road running behind the new building site and all the way to Lake Merced Boulevard. Then, during summer of last year, work on the new building took a back seat to renovation work in the existing main building. Workers wired the entire building for a new computer network that will give Internet access to every Lowell classroom as well as the enhanced electrical systems necessary to power a larger number of computers and other electrical devices. This wiring work in the existing building was planned for the summer months in order to minimize disruption to normal school operations and was largely completed before classes resumed in late August.

Through the early months of 2003, the building has taken shape and is now easily visible to motorists on Lake Merced Boulevard. The new building, funded through local school bonds approved by San Francisco voters in 1997 and state matching funds, will contain a total of 12 classrooms, including science labs, a new journalism computer lab and a ceramics studio. At this time, the project manager hopes to have the new building completed by June, 2003 so that work can again shift to the planned remodeling of existing science labs in the main building during the 2003 summer break and into the fall semester. If all proceeds smoothly, the new wing will be ready for its formal dedication in September, 2003, with detailed information about the dedication events to be posted to the website as soon as they are announced.

The new science wing is nearing completion.

Coming this Fall!
There will be a gala dedication ceremony for Lowell's new Science and Academic Wing. Join fellow alumni, students, faculty, and surprise guests, as we celebrate this important new addition to the lowell campus. Details to come.
